Drank 12 oz of Head Hunter by Fat Head's Brewery & Saloon (2016-11-30) | December 25th, 2016 |
2016-12-30 Smells of lime and pineapple. Carbonation combines with the bitterness perfectly. Very drinkable at 7.5% and lots of flavor. It's got everything you want. Maybe a bit all over the place but hard to complain. It's juicy hoppy, bitter, citrusy, tropical fruity. But it was pricey at $12 for a 4 pack, wonder what it goes for in OH.

Drank 12 oz of Burton Baton by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery (2015-07-01) | December 21st, 2016 |
2018-08-14 Holds up well after 3 years. Maybe better around 1.5 to 2.
2017-03-08 Kind of like a Belgian Strong Ale, candy sugar sweetness but with more malty depth. Some Dried fruit sweetness, as well. Carbonation is superb, incredibly delicate bubbles that give a velvety feel. It's probably not brewed to taste like this but by sheer coincidence is excellent as it ages.
2016-12-21 I need to try this one fresh because I really like it with some age on it. Would be interesting (and expensive) to compare.
Drank 12 oz of Seven Day Sour by Trinity Brewing Company | December 20th, 2016 |
2016-12-20 Not overpoweringly sour, and the flavor goes on forever. Still, it's in that area of sours that I apparently don't like as much. I still get a little of the acetone flavor. Not sure what that is. I love some sours. This one is OK.
Drank 12 oz of Scotty Karate by Dark Horse Brewing Co. (2016-08-26) | December 19th, 2016 |
Drank 22 oz of Citra by Pipeworks Brewing Company (2016-12-12) | December 18th, 2016 |
2016-12-18 I think this one is best at around 3 weeks old. Some of the hop bitterness and alcohol smooths out and the citrus notes really dominate.
Drank 750 ml of Lizard of Koz by Founders Brewing (2016-09-13) | December 16th, 2016 |
2016-12-16 This one was a big hit with everyone. Smelled of sweet chocolate and vanilla from the barrel. Barrel not so present in the taste, which was heavily influenced by the berries. Very surprised how much blueberry there was in the flavor. Definitely a dessert beer. Sweet but also tart with the berries. Halfway through my glass I had some coffee ice cream and blackberries and suddenly the vanilla came to the fore in the beer, and the blueberries stood out as well. But it was very delicious and satisfying. Lots of layers and at a reasonable 10.5%. Fairly thin and more carbonated than similar double stouts but I didn't think it detracted. Seriously considering buying another bottle, even at the price, since the alternative is never having it again.
Drank 750 ml of Barrel Aged Hibernation Ale by Great Divide Brewing Company (2015-02-06) | December 16th, 2016 |
2016-12-16 Incredibly disappointed. This bottle was clearly infected/"off". Very sour, even reminiscent of my infected BCBBW from 2015. And I wasn't the only one to say that. Too bad, I was really looking forward to this one. It smelled pretty good, sweet with some barrel notes but tasted nothing like the aroma. I'd like to try again but it's an expensive bottle at $20-25. Burned once...
Drank 12 oz of Narwhal Imperial Stout by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. (2015-09-11) | December 13th, 2016 |
2016-12-13 Really good RIS. Just below Czar. Can't say it gained much with a year but seems more roasty. Wish the chocolate could come out more.
Drank 12 oz of Insanity by Weyerbacher Brewing Company (2015-12-11) | December 12th, 2016 |
2017-05-23 Tasted a bit sour when cold, I was worried about infection but I don't think that was the case. Extremely yeasty. Tasted like a Belgian ale. Not sure what to think. I liked it better fresher when the bourbon was more prominent and I didn't noticed the yeast as much. I'm tempted to keep it a couple more years to see how it changes but I don't know...
2016-12-12 No hint of the whiskey. Otherwise a good barleywine. Listed as "English Barleywine" but seemed very hoppy to me. Lots of sediment floating around marred the clear red liquid. Very pleasant to drink, just the right balance of sweetness. Shows the 11% abv, though. I don't recall my previous impression but I'm rather disappointed at the lack of barrel character in this bottle.
Drank 750 ml of Sour in the Rye by The Bruery (2015-04-13) | December 11th, 2016 |
2016-12-11 Very sour, not a lot of complexity. A bit vinegary, lemon extract. Smells nice. Refreshing but too much vinegar/acetone flavor for me to go back to. Especially for the price.
Drank 12 oz of Plead the 5th Imperial Stout by Dark Horse Brewing Co. (2015-12) | December 11th, 2016 |
2016-12-11 Same evaluation after a year in the cellar. Too much coffee bitterness for me. Great mouthfeel, smells pretty good, probably a very good beer but I just don't like it.
2016-02-01 It's probably a good imperial stout but too much coffee for me. Don't buy again. Also a palate wrecker.
Drank 12 oz of Backwoods Bastard by Founders Brewing (2016-09-22) | December 10th, 2016 |
2017-03-15 Wow, finally, 6 months after bottling it's finally starting to taste right. That weird, hoppy? flavor has faded and it's sweet and boozy and carmely and buttery.
2016-12-10 Something's wrong this year. Last year was as good as any barrel aged wee heavy on the market. This year has a bitter bite the destroys the carmely sweetness. Can't believe I bought so much this year instead of last year.
Drank 500 ml of Bourbon County Brand Barleywine by Goose Island Beer Co. (2015-10-29) | December 9th, 2016 |
2016-12-09 Definitely had the "off flavors". Barrel is in the aroma, not the flavor. Not at all unpleasant as a sour ale, tastes like tart cherries. You get some of the rich flavors for just the first instant it hits your tongue but then transitions to the sour. Flavor is less pleasant as it warms. Not what it should be. Drink cold and it will be OK. I can get sours at much less than 13% abv and that's not what it should be anyway. At least I got my money back. Might be worth just dumping the other bottle in favor, considering the opportunity cost. |
