Drank 12 oz of Brewer's Reserve Bourbon Barrel Stout by Central Waters Brewing Company (2016-11-14) | February 7th, 2017 |
2017-02-07 I like this vintage a little cooler. Surprisingly, that's where the barrel character comes to the fore. Less distinct and balanced as it warms. I experienced something similar with the BA Silhouette, so maybe it's my palate changing with all the big beers I've been drinking this winter. Really good when it's good, at those lower temps. Not refrigerator cold, but cooler than I typically drink by high gravity beers.
2016-11-22 Kind of a mess right now, honestly. Boozy, harsh and thin. Carbonation overwhelms. Nice vanilla flavors but way too fresh at 8 days old. Should be nice later, though.
Drank 22 oz of Willie – Wee Heavy Scotch Ale by One Barrel Brewing | February 6th, 2017 |
2017-02-06 Really solid scotch ale. Along the lines of Scotty Karate but at 7.5%, presumably. Shows the alcohol, could be much smoother. But lots of great flavor. I'll keep an eye on this brewery.
Drank 500 ml of Skully Barrel No. 40 by Paradox Beer Company (2016) | February 5th, 2017 |
2017-02-05 Really good sour. Enough pineapple, didn't get any rum but my kind of sour. But pricey.
Drank 12 oz of Red Chair NWPA by Deschutes Brewery | February 5th, 2017 |
Drank 12 oz of Narwhal Imperial Stout by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. (2015-09-11) | February 3rd, 2017 |
2016-12-13 Really good RIS. Just below Czar. Can't say it gained much with a year but seems more roasty. Wish the chocolate could come out more.
Drank 12 oz of Expedition Stout by Bell's Brewery, Inc. (2015-11-06) | February 3rd, 2017 |
2017-05-04 Like thick, boozy postum.
Drank 12 oz of Old Foghorn by Anchor Brewing (2013-05-12) | February 3rd, 2017 |
2017-04-22 Agree with previous assessment. Very fine, unhyped beer & brewery.
2016-10-29 Drank at cellar temp without cooling it at all, really sweet. Rich dried apricot sweetness, almost a port. No heat, very smooth.
2016-09-07 Very good classic barleywine. Has a bite at cooler temps so let it warm a bit. Great buy at 3 years old.
Drank 500 ml of Jacobite Ale by Traquair House Brewery | February 2nd, 2017 |
2017-02-02 Eminently quaffable. Smells just right. Taste much lighter than I go for with scotch ales and mouthfeel is very thin. But you have to adjust your expectations for beer made in the old country. This is a beer to drink, not to savor. Beautiful garnet color. Very little carbonation. It's actually impressive to maintain that low level of carbonation over a long period in a bottle. Ultimately this competes more with a bitter than a wee heavy for my palate.
Drank 12 oz of Frootwood by Founders Brewing (2016-12-19) | January 31st, 2017 |
2017-01-31 Nice color, white white head. Very cherry. Like cherry pie cherry. There's some sweetness and barrel, especially when cold, but it never dominates. It's pretty good. I'd like to see the barrel a bit more because it's hard to detect much of the time. I'd probably miss it if it was gone. Not my favorite and I'm not compelled to go buy more.
Drank 22 oz of Hostile Harry by Spiteful Brewing Company (2015-02-25) | January 30th, 2017 |
2017-01-30 Rich, thick, the taste goes on and on. As good as Expedition. This is right there. Smells amazing. Also, isn't one dimensional. Not particularly chocolaty or roasty but some of everything. Incredibly smooth. And it's 10.0%, very impressive.
Drank 12 oz of Backwoods Bastard by Founders Brewing (2016-09-22) | January 29th, 2017 |
2017-03-15 Wow, finally, 6 months after bottling it's finally starting to taste right. That weird, hoppy? flavor has faded and it's sweet and boozy and carmely and buttery.
2016-12-10 Something's wrong this year. Last year was as good as any barrel aged wee heavy on the market. This year has a bitter bite the destroys the carmely sweetness. Can't believe I bought so much this year instead of last year.
Drank 750 ml of Scotch Silly - Bourbon Barrel Aged by Brasserie de Silly | January 27th, 2017 |
2017-01-27 Smelled OK cold, not as malty as I wanted but not bad. As it warmed it started to smell and taste like a sour. Disappointing in the end.
Drank 22 oz of Vanilla Abduction by Pipeworks Brewing Company (2016-12-12) | January 25th, 2017 |
2017-01-25 Yes. Finally a stout that stands up to my ideal, Expedition Stout. Has the right kind of bite for a RIS but is still smooth. Has depth, it's thick. These guys are awesome. It's going to be tough to wait on the Pistachio.
Drank 12 oz of Scream IIPA by New Glarus Brewing Company (2017-01-02) | January 25th, 2017 |
2017-01-25 Best from the IPA glass. But NvU is better.
2017-01-23 Pleasantly bitter but doesn't have the juicy hop flavor I want. 9% should have more flavor but it hides the alcohol well.
2017-01-13 Smells citrusy, lots of hops. Might be a bit too fresh. All NG is bottle conditioned so maybe needs another week or two. It's a high standard, but if I can't do better than NvU I won't be disappointed.
Drank 22 oz of A Couple Two Tree by Pipeworks Brewing Company (2017-01-10) | January 24th, 2017 |
2017-01-24 Really solid scotch all all around...until you get to the spruce tips. It's like a rosemary aftertaste. Why would they do that? |
