Drank 330 ml of HopSynth by Upland Brewing (2016) | January 16th, 2017 |
2017-01-16 I like this end of the sour spectrum. Had some funk at the end and didn't taste like nail polish remover. It's drinkable and refreshing. Lightly hoppy flavor that doesn't dominate.
Drank 22 oz of Stone / Farking / Wheaton Wootstout by Stone Brewing (2016-07-05) | January 15th, 2017 |
2017-05-26 Phew. 13% is a lot. More than I want. As good as I remember the 2015 vintage being, that's a lot of alcohol. This one ended up quite sweet, even though it was chilled. It smoothed out a bit as it warmed but either my palate has changed (which it certainly has) or I just don't like this vintage as much. Still a great value since Stone doesn't gouge like some breweries at the larger format. I'll get to my other bottle of 2015 eventually and then see what I think. If it's worth continuing with a 13% stout.
Drank 22 oz of Vanilla Bean Stout by Avery Brewing Company (2016-10) | January 14th, 2017 |
2017-01-14 OK. Reminds me of BORIS. Not as sweet as I was worried it might be. A bit harsh until it warms. But then you lose the depth of flavor. Will see if it mellows after a year since I have another, older, bottle.
Drank 12 oz of Scream IIPA by New Glarus Brewing Company (2017-01-02) | January 13th, 2017 |
2017-01-25 Best from the IPA glass. But NvU is better.
2017-01-23 Pleasantly bitter but doesn't have the juicy hop flavor I want. 9% should have more flavor but it hides the alcohol well.
2017-01-13 Smells citrusy, lots of hops. Might be a bit too fresh. All NG is bottle conditioned so maybe needs another week or two. It's a high standard, but if I can't do better than NvU I won't be disappointed.
Drank 16 oz of Imperial Biscotti Break by Evil Twin (2016) | January 12th, 2017 |
2017-01-12 Complex and high alcohol. The almond shone through for me, gave it a nice pasty flavor. Didn't get much of the coffee, fine by me. Too much abv, though. Worth trying, and I'd buy the barrel aged version without thinking twice but not part of my regular rotation.
Drank 500 ml of Old Stock Cellar Reserve (Aged In Rye Whiskey Barrels) by North Coast Brewing Co. (2014) | January 10th, 2017 |
2017-01-10 Pushes the boundaries of what beer is. A TON of whiskey. Sweetness of the base beer doesn't come through very much. Very complex but could probably use some more time to level out. It's pretty smooth despite the rye. Really looking forward to the 2013 in bourbon barrels. I'll probably grab another bottle of that if I get the chance since this was so good.
Drank 12 oz of Anti-Hero by Revolution Brewing LLC (2016-11-17) | January 8th, 2017 |
2017-01-06 Could be a go-to. Different qualities come out depending on what it's paired with. Got more of the malt today. I noticed how great the lacing is, also. I'm not blown away but only because it's exactly what I expected. Very impressed.
2017-01-05 Really solid for 6.5%. Aggressive hops. Bitter and flavorful. So much flavor for the abv. I could drink this regularly. I like it a lot better than Luponic Distortion, actually.
Drank 22 oz of Brewhouse Coffee Stout by Central Waters Brewing Company | January 8th, 2017 |
2017-01-08 Don't miss this release again. Great coffee flavor without the bitterness. Very drinkable and 8.2% abv.
Drank 12 oz of Anti-Hero by Revolution Brewing LLC (2016-11-17) | January 6th, 2017 |

Drank 12 oz of Founders Imperial Stout by Founders Brewing (2014-12-02) | January 4th, 2017 |
2017-01-04 Yeah, pretty good at 2 years but few stand up to Expedition.
2016-04-11 Dark and roasty, molasses. I like this a lot better than their Breakfast Stout (maybe I need to try that one again) but not as much as Expedition Stout. Still a great beer.
2016-01-18 Over a year old but doesn't taste much different than fresh. Maybe not worth the cellar space to age this one?
Drank 12 oz of Head Hunter by Fat Head's Brewery & Saloon (2016-11-30) | December 30th, 2016 |
2016-12-30 Smells of lime and pineapple. Carbonation combines with the bitterness perfectly. Very drinkable at 7.5% and lots of flavor. It's got everything you want. Maybe a bit all over the place but hard to complain. It's juicy hoppy, bitter, citrusy, tropical fruity. But it was pricey at $12 for a 4 pack, wonder what it goes for in OH.
Drank 330 ml of Aphrodite by Brasserie Dieu du Ciel | December 30th, 2016 |
2016-12-30 Surprisingly bitter. I wouldn't have thought it was a stout. More of a bitter black ale. The cocoa and vanilla came through in the aroma and sometimes in the flavor. I wanted it to be sweeter. It tasted like bittersweet chocolate, maybe that's where it got the bite from. Some pleasant flavors at times but I didn't like it all that much. Should have gotten the newer vintage, this was probably at least 2015, but I think it's just not what I want.
Drank 16 oz of Even More Jesus by Evil Twin (2016) | December 29th, 2016 |
2016-12-29 Super thick and chocolaty. Shows the alcohol. Pricey enough but not ridiculous compared to a 22oz bottle. Worth keeping around. I like this one a bit cooler than most big beers, though. Turns a bit harsh and boozy as it warms. Even a bit salty at the very end. Stacks up well to Expedition Stout, but not a RIS. |
