Drank 12 oz of Expedition Stout by Bell's Brewery, Inc. (2015-10-16)December 19th, 2017

Still fantastic. No drop-off but my preference center's around the three year mark. Barrel-aged is great but not what I want all the time. Perfect with beef stew.

Nearly 3 years old and this is in it's prime.

Yep, this is my definition of Russian Imperial Stout.
Drank 275 ml of Courage Imperial Stout by Wells and (&) Youngs Brewing Company Ltd. (2013-09-02)December 18th, 2017
2017-12-18
Rich, roasty but not a harsh roasty, dark chocolate, toasted nuts, coffee aroma. This is about as good as any RIS I've had. Sadly, it was over $1/oz in the vintage 2 pack with an engraved snifter. Haven't had a chance to buy it otherwise. I'll sit on the other one for another 5 years and see what happens.
Drank 22 oz of Slugger (Whiskey Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout) by Potosi Brewing Company (2017)December 17th, 2017

Huge asterisk to this review: there was an algae like disc that had setteld at the bottom of the bottle (I assume) and ended up floating in my glass. Infection? Just residue? I only had one bottle and I'm not willing to shell out for another to compare. Really disappointed in this one, especially at the price point (luckily this was a gift). Body is thinner than ideal but that's easily forgivable. Plenty of barrel in the aroma but there's a tartness in the flavor that shouldn't be. The rest of the beer wasn't enough to overcome that deficiency. Sticky mouthfeel, despite being thin. Possible minor infection? Some espresso and a bit of chocolate. Drinkable but not one I particularly savored.
Drank 12 oz of Azacca IPA by Founders Brewing (2017-11-06)December 16th, 2017

Hops came out much more with the Teku. My first real success with that glass.

Smells great, tropical fruit. But the caramel malt sweetness, as light as it is, is enough to mess with the flavors to the point where it doesn't taste all that hoppy. It doesn't fit the profile for most IPAs, so it probably has a niche. But I don't drink IPAs for the malt.
Drank 12 oz of Backwoods Bastard by Founders Brewing (2017-09-28)December 15th, 2017

Much better than it was a month ago. Nice and buttery.

I don't like tripels. It's probably good. I just don't like it. I poured most of it out.
Drank 22 oz of The Abyss by Deschutes Brewery (2015-12-08)December 11th, 2017
2017-12-11
Don't drink this fully refrigerated. It's all bitter chocolate and coffee roast. When it warms just a bit all kinds of complexity and sweetness come out. At the right temp it's beautiful.
Drank 16 oz of Pseudo Sue by Toppling Goliath (2017-10-25)December 10th, 2017

Smells great, and it's refreshing. But every sip makes me wish it was an IPA.

Holds up well but doesn't particularly benefit from ageing. Tastes the same as the 2018, which is to say excellent.

Different than any previous year I remember. Smells like straight up whiskey, tastes like burnt caramel. It's not unpleasant but doesn't have the malty sweet richness I love. It's fresh, though. Needs some time to settle.
Drank 22 oz of Reaper vs Unicorn by Pipeworks Brewing Company (2016-09-23)December 9th, 2017
2017-12-09
I thought it was great. Like CW, but without the bourbon and a little less woody. Not too sweet, plenty of earthy hop flavor. I need more descriptors. It was good. Like a really mellow fresh hop IPA but imperialized.
Drank 12 oz of Spiteful IPA by Spiteful Brewing Company (2017-10-11)December 9th, 2017

Very efficient. Doesn't quite have the Anti-Hero body but this could be my new standard at 6.2%. I wish Pipeworks would compete in this arena. No complaint, though. Doesn't taste thin like some and has plenty of pleasant bitterness. I'd like to try it really fresh to get a better handle on the hop character. Some pineapple aroma and citrus (not grapefruit so much) flavor. A nice modern IPA.
