Drank 12 oz of Backwoods Bastard by Founders Brewing (2017-09-28) | December 10th, 2017 |
2017-12-12 Much better than it was a month ago. Nice and buttery.
2017-12-10 Unknown date of consumption. Forgot to record an entry somewhere.
Drank 12 oz of Brewer's Reserve Bourbon Barrel Scotch Ale by Central Waters Brewing Company (2017-07-18) | December 10th, 2017 |
2020-01-28 Holds up well but doesn't particularly benefit from ageing. Tastes the same as the 2018, which is to say excellent.
2017-12-10 Unknown date of consumption. Forgot to record an entry somewhere.
2017-08-02 Different than any previous year I remember. Smells like straight up whiskey, tastes like burnt caramel. It's not unpleasant but doesn't have the malty sweet richness I love. It's fresh, though. Needs some time to settle.
Drank 22 oz of Reaper vs Unicorn by Pipeworks Brewing Company (2016-09-23) | December 9th, 2017 |
2017-12-09 I thought it was great. Like CW, but without the bourbon and a little less woody. Not too sweet, plenty of earthy hop flavor. I need more descriptors. It was good. Like a really mellow fresh hop IPA but imperialized.
Drank 12 oz of Spiteful IPA by Spiteful Brewing Company (2017-10-11) | December 9th, 2017 |
2017-12-09 Very efficient. Doesn't quite have the Anti-Hero body but this could be my new standard at 6.2%. I wish Pipeworks would compete in this arena. No complaint, though. Doesn't taste thin like some and has plenty of pleasant bitterness. I'd like to try it really fresh to get a better handle on the hop character. Some pineapple aroma and citrus (not grapefruit so much) flavor. A nice modern IPA.
Drank 12 oz of Azacca IPA by Founders Brewing (2017-11-06) | December 8th, 2017 |
2017-12-16 Hops came out much more with the Teku. My first real success with that glass.
2017-12-13 Smells great, tropical fruit. But the caramel malt sweetness, as light as it is, is enough to mess with the flavors to the point where it doesn't taste all that hoppy. It doesn't fit the profile for most IPAs, so it probably has a niche. But I don't drink IPAs for the malt.
Drank 12 oz of Brewer's Reserve Bourbon Barrel Stout by Central Waters Brewing Company (2017-10-17) | December 6th, 2017 |
2017-12-06 Cocoa powder. Less bourbon than I remember from the other bottle, wouldn't mind a little more. It also needs another month, at least, to settle in the bottle. But maybe the best vintage that I can remember.
2017-11-24 The 2016 took a few months to get this good. This one is ready to go out of the gate. Chocolate bomb on the nose and tongue. Some coffee at the backend, too. More than I remember in other vintages. This is simply great. Reaffirms that I don't _need_ any other barrel stout.
Drank 500 ml of Bourbon County Brand Stout (2015) by Goose Island Beer Co. (2015-11-09) | December 5th, 2017 |
2018-12-28 Last 2015 bottle. Sigh.
2017-12-05 Makes me reconsider my boycott of Goose Island.
Drank 16 oz of Pseudo Sue by Toppling Goliath (2017-10-25) | December 4th, 2017 |
2017-12-04 Smells great, and it's refreshing. But every sip makes me wish it was an IPA.
Drank 16 oz of Pseudo Sue by Toppling Goliath (2017-10-25) | December 3rd, 2017 |
2017-12-04 Smells great, and it's refreshing. But every sip makes me wish it was an IPA.
Drank 22 oz of Signature Series Imperial Stout by Dry Dock Brewing Co. (2016) | December 2nd, 2017 |
2017-12-02 Thick and rich. Reminded me of Silhouette, initially, with a little more coffee. But became a bit harsh once it warmed a little. I still liked it a lot.
Drank 16 oz of Pseudo Sue by Toppling Goliath (2017-10-25) | December 1st, 2017 |
2017-12-04 Smells great, and it's refreshing. But every sip makes me wish it was an IPA.
Drank 330 ml of Foreign Extra Stout by Guinness Ltd. (2017-05-08) | November 30th, 2017 |
Drank 12 oz of Brewer's Reserve Bourbon Barrel Barleywine by Central Waters Brewing Company (2017-03-16) | November 29th, 2017 |
2020-01-17 So, this takes 2 or 3 years of aging to get it where I want it. The bite is gone, the heat is gone, so smooth and rich. Tastes unmistakably like a barleywine, and an American barleywine at that, but so well integrated. One of the few worth the cellar space. Sigh, not quite Straightjacket but half the price.
2019-01-30 Life. | |
2018-01-09 This was a little more woody tasting earlier on but now the sweeter stickiness is coming out just like you want from a barleywine.
Drank 12 oz of Bourbon Barrel Scotty Karate by Dark Horse Brewing Co. (2017-05-26) | November 28th, 2017 |
2017-11-28 I noticed the barrel a lot more with big vanilla tones when it was fully chilled, still had that Scotty bite. I liked it quite a bit this time.
2017-10-16 Not much flavor when chilled, or at least not much more flavor than the reg variety although it smells great. It gets pretty sweet when it warms, though. I like the non BA variety better, and it's half the price...
2017-08-08 I guess I like this one better fully cold. It's not that the bourbon comes out more, but it just becomes so rich and sweet.
2017-07-28 Lighter on the barrel than I prefer. Still has that Scotty bite but with some fuzzy warmth. Hard to say if it's improved, though. I like Scotty for that bite, when I want a bourbon barrel scotch ale, bring the bourbon! CW still rules. And this was >$16, more than double regular Scotty.
Drank 16 oz of Working For The Weekend by Spiteful Brewing Company (2017-10-18) | November 27th, 2017 |
2017-11-27 Pure grapefruit this time with some malty depth out of the IPA glass. Don't pass up NvU for this.
2017-11-20 Much better out of the Speigelau IPA glass. The piney bitterness of the hops come through. Also less sweet. Might have been the pairing of the food, Indian curry this time, but I think the glass played a large part.
2017-11-16 Big grapefruit, maltier than I expected. I need to try a different glass. Sweeter than it should be at <8%. It's a solid IPA but maybe I'm just spoiled. |
