Drank 750 ml of Wisconsin Belgian Red by New Glarus Brewing Company | April 28th, 2017 |
2020-04-15 Works as a float but doesn't completely mesh with the vanilla custard.
Drank 12 oz of Hop Jockey by Lakefront Brewery (2017-04-07) | April 27th, 2017 |
2017-04-20 Really bitter, big hop flavor. Scratches the itch that a lot of IPAs miss. Juicy isn't everything. Sometimes I want bitterness, too.
Drank 22 oz of Imperial Russian Stout by Stone Brewing (2016-03-13) | April 26th, 2017 |
2017-04-26 Tried it chilled this time. Maybe better. My worldview is shaken. Are stouts better cold? I'll never believe that barleywines and high abv scotch ales are better cold but maybe stouts? The BA Silhouette was exceptional cold. BORIS was unimpressive at cellar temp. I've been disappointed by a few stouts at cellar temp...
2017-03-13 Exactly one year out from bottling. Excellent value at $7 for a 22oz but I'd gladly pay $10 if it were a little thicker. A classic RIS and it hits the right notes for me. Too bad they're not making it this year, really trips up my nascent vertical. But I have so many bottles of other already and Expedition Stout is so good. There are others.
Drank 12 oz of Strawberry Rhubarb by New Glarus Brewing Company (2017-04-18) | April 26th, 2017 |
2017-11-13 Holds up well so far. I have heard that strawberry drops off quickly in beer, but not yet. Really good, wouldn't mind if they brought it back every year.
2017-04-26 Turbid. Smells great, like strawberry jelly. Maybe influence a bit by the actual strawberry jelly in my sandwich? Rhubarb comes across much more in the flavor. Took me a bit to parse the flavors, at first I was just expecting massive strawberry, then it seemed like it just wasn't a fresh fruit flavor. The rhubarb covers up a lot of the maltiness so it ends up tasting more like spritzer than beer. And at 4% you can basically drink it that way. Interested to see how much it will settle, although it's bottle conditioned. I can't put this up with Serendipity but I like it as much as the Belgian Red.
Drank 12 oz of Backwoods Bastard by Founders Brewing (2016-09-22) | April 25th, 2017 |
2017-03-15 Wow, finally, 6 months after bottling it's finally starting to taste right. That weird, hoppy? flavor has faded and it's sweet and boozy and carmely and buttery.
2016-12-10 Something's wrong this year. Last year was as good as any barrel aged wee heavy on the market. This year has a bitter bite the destroys the carmely sweetness. Can't believe I bought so much this year instead of last year.
Drank 12 oz of Hop Jockey by Lakefront Brewery (2017-04-07) | April 24th, 2017 |
2017-04-20 Really bitter, big hop flavor. Scratches the itch that a lot of IPAs miss. Juicy isn't everything. Sometimes I want bitterness, too.
Drank 12 oz of Old Foghorn by Anchor Brewing (2013-05-12) | April 22nd, 2017 |
2017-04-22 Agree with previous assessment. Very fine, unhyped beer & brewery.
2016-10-29 Drank at cellar temp without cooling it at all, really sweet. Rich dried apricot sweetness, almost a port. No heat, very smooth.
2016-09-07 Very good classic barleywine. Has a bite at cooler temps so let it warm a bit. Great buy at 3 years old.
Drank 12 oz of Hop Jockey by Lakefront Brewery (2017-04-07) | April 22nd, 2017 |

Drank 12 oz of Expedition Stout by Bell's Brewery, Inc. (2015-11-06) | April 18th, 2017 |
2017-05-04 Like thick, boozy postum.
Drank 750 ml of Oude Tart by The Bruery (2015-08-25) | April 16th, 2017 |
2017-04-16 Major acetone. I don't know what it is with some of these sours. I don't know how to identify which ones will be like this. I haven't had a bottle from them yet that I loved...
Drank 12 oz of KBS (Kentucky Breakfast Stout) by Founders Brewing (2017-02-21) | April 16th, 2017 |
2017-10-15 A little more bitter than I remembered. Smoothed a bit as it warmed but still more coffee and dark chocolate than I prefer. Bourbon is barely there right now to my palate.
2017-05-21 This is the best KBS has ever tasted to me. So balanced and chocolaty, but not rich. Deceptively smooth at nearly 12% ABV. Thinner than many consider ideal for big stouts but screw that, this is basically perfect. A little bitter but coffee doesn't overwhelm. Bourbon is surprisingly low key which really lets the other flavors shine.
2017-04-07 Harsher than the 2016 but has more flavor. Hope it will settle a bit in the bottle. Exquisitely balanced as always. |
