Drank 22 oz of Barleywine Style Ale by Smuttynose Brewing Co. (2013) | September 18th, 2019 |
2018-03-15 Notes similar to a year ago, although head is big with beautiful lacing. 5 years old with seemingly no carbonation lost. Wonderfully complex, perfectly balanced American barleywine. A little bitterness, a little sweetness, a lot of complexity. Only one more and I'll truly be sad when they're gone.
2017-03-04 Deep amber, clear, with a one-finger head. A nice layer of bubbles linger. Brown sugar, caramel, toffee aromas. Taste is toffee, brown sugar, caramel, dried black cherries, molasses, a hint of vanilla, and a bit of resiny hop bitterness still remains. No cardboard or signs of oxidation. Finish is just a bit boozy. Mouthfeel is smooth, carbonation hasn't hardly fallen off at all.
Drank Narwhal 2017 by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. (2017-08-15) | March 12th, 2019 |
2019-03-12 Less chocolatey than 1 year, a hint of cherry. Better at 1 year.
Drank Straight Jacket by Revolution Brewing LLC (2018-01-05) | March 1st, 2019 |
2019-03-01 Way less boozy than fresh. Sweet spot might be 6 months.
Drank Christmas Bomb by Prairie Artisan Ales (2017) | December 30th, 2018 |
Drank Old Foghorn by Anchor Brewing (2016-12) | December 25th, 2018 |
2018-12-25 Brown sugar, figs, toffee, tea, bit of hop bitterness.
2018-06-28 Huge, foamy head. Deep amber. A layer of bubbles linger. Scent is a bit of hop, both british and american, brown sugar. Taste is brown sugar, tea, molasses, slight bitterness, a hint of tropical hop, tea-like finish. Very complex.
Drank Ibex Series: Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout by Schlafly (2016-12-22) | December 25th, 2018 |
2017-12-27 Black, medium-thin consistency. Big, foamy head. Lacing, lingering bubbles around the rim. Scent is vanilla, bourbon, malt. Really great scent. Taste is vanilla, bourbon, chocolate, molasses, a hint of cardboard. A bit of warming booze. Fairly dry, bourbon/lightly chocolate finish. Not hugely malty, but hugely flavorful and complex. A smooth vanilla/bourbon delight.
Drank Orval Trappist Ale by Brasserie d'Orval (2015-12-08) | December 18th, 2018 |
2018-12-18 Funkier than 1.5 year, great carbonation, a tad darker, still a bit of bitterness. Very different from the 1.5 year version.
Drank 12 oz of Fore Smoked Stout by Dark Horse Brewing Co. (2015) | December 11th, 2018 |
2018-12-11 A bit of smoke with nice, complex aged stout flavors. Great beer to age.
2017-11-02 Pours black, medium-oily, half finger mocha head. Bubbles linger around the glass. Scent is aged stout-dark fruit, a bit of chocolate. Taste is dried dark fruit, smoke, chocolate. Superb balance. Wonderful complexity. Still nice carbonation, medium body. Finish is pleasant smoke, chocolate, dried dark fruit, and a hint of bitterness.
2017-01-10 Pours black with a mocha head. Good carbonation still, bubbles last til the end. Smoke is most prominent aroma, but some malty roastiness as well. Taste is very balanced for a smoked stout. Smoke, roast, even some coffee & a little malt sweetness present.
Drank Deth's Tar by Revolution Brewing LLC (2018-10-15) | December 1st, 2018 |
2018-12-01 Lots of bourbon. A bit of chocolate maltiness. One I think would benefit from aging.
