Drank Bigfoot by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. (2014-12-18) | February 15th, 2017 |
2017-02-15 Deep amber with a foamy head. Wonderfully carbonated with great lacing. Beautiful beer. A tiny bit of sediment.Scent is lightly of brown sugar and dried fruit. No hope aromas. Taste is very balanced. Hops are still noticeable but not dominant like they once were. Definitely still a bitter American barleywine. Some dried fruit and sherry flavors are emerging, Brown sugar and caramel. Just a hint of booziness, but it seems less than I recall from a year ago. Mouthfeel is smooth, yet well-carbonated. Not syrupy like some English barleywines get. Finish is fairly dry, with a big of lingering toasted carmel and dried fruit. This beer is definitely increasing in complexity as hops fade and oxidation takes effect.
Drank 750 ml of Barrel Aged Adam's Beard by Dry Ground Brewing Company (2015-12) | February 9th, 2017 |
2017-02-09 Pours dark amber, a half finger head. Bubbles linger around the rim. Scent of brown sugar and whisky. Whisky has really dropped off (was hot when fresh). Still prominent, but a bit of the Beard shines through. Brown sugar, oak. Dry whisky finish.
Drank Ten Fidy by Oskar Blues Brewery (2015-01-27) | January 31st, 2017 |
2018-02-13 Huge, foamy, copper head, even after 3 years. Oily black. Scent of dark fruit, cocoa, a hint of hops. Taste is chocolate, dried cherries, just a bit of roasty bitterness in the finish, along with the dried fruits and cocoa. Really transformed from fresh, although notes compare pretty similarly to 2 years.
2017-01-31 Pours black & oil thick (of course), with a tan 1 finger head. It lasts and laces very nicely. Scent is malty sweet. No hops. Taste is noticeably less roasty than fresh. Sweetness is the dominant flavor. Just a hint of cough syrup flavor, but not gross, pleasant as is, just a touch. Bitter chocolate, raisin, sweet dried fruit, just a hint of coffee. No more hop bitterness, just a hint of roasty bitterness. Finish is sweet, long lasting. The beer has really changed over 2 years.
Drank 22 oz of Imperial Stout by Smuttynose Brewing Co. (2015-02) | January 20th, 2017 |
2017-06-05 1 finger head, bubbles linger. Definite hop presence even after 27 months. A bit of chocolate malt, hop bitterness, and dried dark fruit. Really a nice, complex stout.
2017-01-20 Nearly two years old. Black but not thick. Still has a nice head, half a finger and bubbles that stick around. Scent is gentle malty sweetness with a hint of cocoa. Taste is subtle coffee, chocolate covered raisins. Hops seem to be gone, but there is a faint bitterness still. Slightly sweet, coffee finish. Very nice, age has done this beer well.
Drank 12 oz of Fore Smoked Stout by Dark Horse Brewing Co. (2015) | January 10th, 2017 |
2018-12-11 A bit of smoke with nice, complex aged stout flavors. Great beer to age.
2017-11-02 Pours black, medium-oily, half finger mocha head. Bubbles linger around the glass. Scent is aged stout-dark fruit, a bit of chocolate. Taste is dried dark fruit, smoke, chocolate. Superb balance. Wonderful complexity. Still nice carbonation, medium body. Finish is pleasant smoke, chocolate, dried dark fruit, and a hint of bitterness.
2017-01-10 Pours black with a mocha head. Good carbonation still, bubbles last til the end. Smoke is most prominent aroma, but some malty roastiness as well. Taste is very balanced for a smoked stout. Smoke, roast, even some coffee & a little malt sweetness present.
Drank 22 oz of Wheat Wine by Smuttynose Brewing Co. (2014) | November 16th, 2016 |
2016-11-16 Pours with a nice head, some bubbles remain. Deep clear amber. Scent is pretty much boozy. Taste is alcohol, with some underlying caramel malty barleywine flavor. Body is thinner like a wheat. Essentially like a somewhat watered down (in taste and body, but not in alchohol) barleywine.
Drank 22 oz of Really Old Brown Dog Ale by Smuttynose Brewing Co. (2012) | November 16th, 2016 |
2018-04-25 Still excellent carbonation. A bit of oxidation, but just enough that it's pleasant and gained a bit of complexity over the last one I'd tried. Still a great beer at 6 years.
2017-09-27 Same notes as before, even more head actually.
2017-04-12 1 finger head (still), clear deep amber. A bit of sediment. Molasses, brown sugar, and a bit of booze. Still nice at ~5 years.
2016-11-16 Past prime. Perhaps drink others more quickly. |
