Drank Bourbon Barrel Quad by Schlafly (2018-02) | May 5th, 2018 |
2018-05-05 Not a ton of bourbon, nice dark fruity quad flavors.
Drank 22 oz of Really Old Brown Dog Ale by Smuttynose Brewing Co. (2012) | April 25th, 2018 |
2018-04-25 Still excellent carbonation. A bit of oxidation, but just enough that it's pleasant and gained a bit of complexity over the last one I'd tried. Still a great beer at 6 years.
2017-09-27 Same notes as before, even more head actually.
2017-04-12 1 finger head (still), clear deep amber. A bit of sediment. Molasses, brown sugar, and a bit of booze. Still nice at ~5 years.
2016-11-16 Past prime. Perhaps drink others more quickly.
Drank 375 ml of Rooted in Friendschip by White Rooster (2018-03) | April 23rd, 2018 |
2018-04-23 Murky peach colored, ring of bubbles linger. Scent is tumeric, sour, hint of funk. Taste is moderately-strong sour, tumeric, breadiness, and tartness in the finish. Very nice, see how it ages.
Drank 750 ml of Miles Davis' Bitches Brew by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery (2015-02) | April 11th, 2018 |
2018-04-11 Big, mocha head. Smells like a big, roasty stout. Taste is more stout-like, a bit more bitter, less sweet than fresh. Complex, but lost the sweetness of fresh, so a bit less complex. Still a great beer, although I'd probably not age this more than a year, or else try to age it 3-4 years to see if any aged flavors come through.
Drank 12 oz of Wood-aged bitches brew stout by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery (2018) | April 10th, 2018 |
2018-04-10 Big, foamy mocha head. A nice layer of bubbles lingers. Scent is a little roasty, a little hoppy. Taste is sweet, roasty, a little bitter, a hint of wood. Hugely complex. Finish is balance of sweet and roasty. Complexity is off the chain, and some very unique flavors.
Drank Bigfoot by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. (2015-12-04) | March 23rd, 2018 |
Drank 22 oz of Barleywine Style Ale by Smuttynose Brewing Co. (2013) | March 15th, 2018 |
2018-03-15 Notes similar to a year ago, although head is big with beautiful lacing. 5 years old with seemingly no carbonation lost. Wonderfully complex, perfectly balanced American barleywine. A little bitterness, a little sweetness, a lot of complexity. Only one more and I'll truly be sad when they're gone.
2017-03-04 Deep amber, clear, with a one-finger head. A nice layer of bubbles linger. Brown sugar, caramel, toffee aromas. Taste is toffee, brown sugar, caramel, dried black cherries, molasses, a hint of vanilla, and a bit of resiny hop bitterness still remains. No cardboard or signs of oxidation. Finish is just a bit boozy. Mouthfeel is smooth, carbonation hasn't hardly fallen off at all.
Drank Brewer's Reserve Bourbon Barrel Barleywine by Central Waters Brewing Company (2016-02) | March 11th, 2018 |
2018-03-11 Deep clear amber, nice foamy lingering head, some lacing. Scent is carmel-bourbon, molasses. First sip immediately noticed smooth mouthfeel, perfect carbonation. Perfect balance between carmel/molasses, hop bitterness, bourbon, oak in the finish. Hugely complex. Bitter & sweet, just the right amount of bourbon booze. Amazing beer.
Drank Ten Fidy by Oskar Blues Brewery (2015-01-27) | February 13th, 2018 |
2018-02-13 Huge, foamy, copper head, even after 3 years. Oily black. Scent of dark fruit, cocoa, a hint of hops. Taste is chocolate, dried cherries, just a bit of roasty bitterness in the finish, along with the dried fruits and cocoa. Really transformed from fresh, although notes compare pretty similarly to 2 years.
2017-01-31 Pours black & oil thick (of course), with a tan 1 finger head. It lasts and laces very nicely. Scent is malty sweet. No hops. Taste is noticeably less roasty than fresh. Sweetness is the dominant flavor. Just a hint of cough syrup flavor, but not gross, pleasant as is, just a touch. Bitter chocolate, raisin, sweet dried fruit, just a hint of coffee. No more hop bitterness, just a hint of roasty bitterness. Finish is sweet, long lasting. The beer has really changed over 2 years.
Drank Vermilion Barleywine by Perennial Artisan Ales (2017) | February 6th, 2018 |
2018-02-06 Thin head, bubbles linger around the rim. Deep, dark amber/brown. Scent is earthy hops, molasses. Taste is molasses, earthy hops, bitter hops, toffee, dates. Not overly sweet. Hugely complex, really amazing fresh. Bitter, earthy finish. British ingredients, but hoppy, not overly sweet like Fullers. Amazing.
Drank Ten Fidy - Bourbon Barrel-Aged by Oskar Blues Brewery (2016-10-26) | February 5th, 2018 |
2018-02-05 Much less bourbon than fresh. Quite good, but big can was too much even to split. Booziness really evident at the end.
Drank 22 oz of Imperial Stout by Smuttynose Brewing Co. (2015-02) | January 31st, 2018 |
2017-06-05 1 finger head, bubbles linger. Definite hop presence even after 27 months. A bit of chocolate malt, hop bitterness, and dried dark fruit. Really a nice, complex stout.
2017-01-20 Nearly two years old. Black but not thick. Still has a nice head, half a finger and bubbles that stick around. Scent is gentle malty sweetness with a hint of cocoa. Taste is subtle coffee, chocolate covered raisins. Hops seem to be gone, but there is a faint bitterness still. Slightly sweet, coffee finish. Very nice, age has done this beer well.
Drank Stickee Monkee by Firestone Walker Brewing Co. (2017-05) | January 1st, 2018 |
2018-01-01 Deep, dark amber, thin head with bubbles that won't quit. Caramel raisin scent, hint of bourbon. Taste is raisin, caramel, bourbon, plum, vanilla, brown sugar, molasses, rum. Sweet, but not overly. Hugely complex, hugely flavorful, deceptively strong. Molasses, hint of chocolate, bourbon finish.
Drank Ibex Series: Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout by Schlafly (2016-12-22) | December 27th, 2017 |
2017-12-27 Black, medium-thin consistency. Big, foamy head. Lacing, lingering bubbles around the rim. Scent is vanilla, bourbon, malt. Really great scent. Taste is vanilla, bourbon, chocolate, molasses, a hint of cardboard. A bit of warming booze. Fairly dry, bourbon/lightly chocolate finish. Not hugely malty, but hugely flavorful and complex. A smooth vanilla/bourbon delight.
Drank Brown Shugga by Lagunitas Brewing Company (2017-10) | November 30th, 2017 |
2017-11-30 Amber, big head, lacing. Hoppy (fruity and a hint of bitter), malty goodness. Brown sugar, just a hint of booze. Celebration meets Bigfoot. |
