Drank 16 oz of Barrel Aged Lapwing by Sketchbook Brewing Co. (2019) | January 4th, 2020 |
2020-01-04 I'm reticent to pass judgment without tasting the base beer but considering the discrepancy in ABV and Sketchbook's track record, I'm willing to lay the blame for lack of depth/complexity on the low volume barrel aging process. Not to slander Few at all. Without any standard to chase or blending process to chase this is a hit-or-miss prospect. It's simply not great.
2019-12-15 The base scotch ale seems a bit one note, dirty caramel. Lots of char from the barrel. Doesn't approach the offerings from Central Waters, or Founders.
Drank 12 oz of Bourbon Barrel Doppelbock by Lakefront Brewery (2019-01-21) | January 2nd, 2020 |
2019-07-10 Has some really nice caramely notes and the barrel is about as well integrated as you could hope but... this style just isn't a good candidate for barrel aging. Fun, but not a banger.
Drank 12 oz of Brewer's Reserve Bourbon Barrel Scotch Ale by Central Waters Brewing Company (2018-07-03) | December 31st, 2019 |
Drank 12 oz of Straight Jacket by Revolution Brewing LLC (2019-10-31) | December 18th, 2019 |
2020-12-21 The 2018 was my favorite, this can really hit the spot, though.
2020-10-28 Thick at the bottom of the glass, and more maple syrupy than I remember. I hope the 2020 is more like the 2018, though.
Drank 12 oz of Deth's Tar by Revolution Brewing LLC (2019-10-03) | December 16th, 2019 |
2020-10-30 Silky smooth.
2020-06-13 Half a can is just right.
2019-12-16 A bit too much. Only open this when you're ready and desirous of true decadence. Drips barrel, almost a licorice sweetness, rich. Could do with more bitterness and roast.
Drank 16 oz of Barrel Aged Lapwing by Sketchbook Brewing Co. (2019) | December 15th, 2019 |

Drank 750 ml of Silouhette - Barrel Aged by Lift Bridge Brewery (2018-01) | December 15th, 2019 |
2019-12-15 Sad to see this starting to turn sour, not ruined yet but a shade of what it can be.
2019-12-07 Smells great, but this is going sour.
Drank 12 oz of Straight Jacket by Revolution Brewing LLC (2019-01-04) | December 14th, 2019 |
2019-02-06 This is amazing.
Drank 275 ml of Harvest Ale (Calvados Cask) by JW Lees and Co. (Brewers) Ltd. (2017) | December 13th, 2019 |
2019-12-13 Really sweet, seems well integrated now compared to my previous notes. Exquisite, tiny, soft, foamy bubbles. Looks kind of gross, lots of suspended matter. A different approach to a barrel aged barleywine that my experience with American made examples of the style, and I don't mean the hoppier American style barleywine.
2018-12-10 More cask on the nose than the tongue. Really nice, but probably needs some time to age. I liked the non-BA version even better but that was 2001 vintage so not a fair comparison.
Drank 12 oz of Serendipity by New Glarus Brewing Company | December 13th, 2019 |
2018-01-31 Very heavy on the apple from the Teku glass.
2016-05-19 Blows me away, every time. The wrong food pairing can wreck this beer, though. First glass was amazing. After a salad with vinegar mustard dressing, all I could taste was the apples and a little cherry tart and cranberry sour.
Drank 12 oz of Brewer's Reserve Bourbon Barrel Stout by Central Waters Brewing Company (2019-10-16) | December 12th, 2019 |

Drank 12 oz of Olde School Barleywine by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery (2017-01-18) | December 3rd, 2019 |
2019-12-03 Now it's really really good. Wish I had waited a little longer to open the first couple of bottles. Then I'd plan to drink them this winter. I guess it could get better, but it's really nice now.
2019-08-09 I can drink it with tacos. Certainly not the most optimal pairing but they're both still good even if they have completely separate flavor profiles. It's sweet. That's mostly what I'm getting this time. It's good, doesn't beat you over the head with hops.
2019-01-09 Now it tastes good. Alcohol heat is gone, leaving behind raisin, date, fig, sweetness. Incredibly deceiving 15% now, I would guess 11%. However, as pleasant as it is I don't long for a beer that tastes like this. I don't avoid eating food or brushing my teeth afterwards in order to continue enjoying the aftertaste. It's as good as any naked barleywine I've ever had, but can't aspire to the same heights as one aged in spirit barrels.
2018-05-05 Still plenty of alcohol heat. Not a dramatic amount of flavor for 15%. I guess I'll give it another year but I'm underwhelmed. Why do I keep trying stuff that isn't Central Waters? |
